Late Heroics Propel Charlotte to OT Victory Over Rice

Late Heroics Propel Charlotte to OT Victory Over Rice

CHARLOTTE – With six minutes left in the game, it was
looking like Charlotte was on its way to a third-straight loss. The 49ers, who
had dropped two straight games against FAU and Western Kentucky, were reeling
from the sixteen-play, nine-and-a-half-minute drive the Rice Owls had just forced
down their throats.

Looking at the scoreboard and seeing a ten-point deficit, Charlotte
coach Will Healy looked over at Chris Reynolds and smiled, knowing his senior
quarterback would know what to do. Reynolds was up to the task, leading the
49ers to two consecutive scoring drives and forcing overtime.

In the extra session, Reynolds hit freshman receiver Elijah
Spencer over the middle for the go-ahead score. When Luke Martin came down with
the interception on Rice's possession, the 49ers stormed the field, celebrating
the 31-24 victory and securing a Homecoming memory for years to come.

Reynolds was 20-of-29 passes for 292 yards and three scores.
Six different receivers hauled in a pass for the 49ers on Saturday, led by Spener
and Grant DuBose with six catches each. Calvin Camp had the long reception for the
day, a fifty-nine catch and run to open the scoring in the first quarter. Shadrich
Byrd led the team with fifty-four yards and a score on the ground.

Geo Howard led a Charlotte defense that found itself in a
bend-don't-break mentality late in the fourth quarter. Howard, a junior
defensive back who transferred from Purdue, had eleven tackles on the day.

Ari Broussard was punishing on the ground for the visiting
Owls. The sophomore running back from New Orleans had 186 yards and two
touchdowns on twenty attempts. Charlotte native Christian VanSickle was 3-of-3
on extra points and kicked a twenty-five-yard field goal for the visitors.

Charlotte and Rice had met twice previously in the 49ers'
first two seasons of FBS football. Being from different divisions in Conference
USA, scheduling had precluded the two teams from meeting since 2016. Rice won
the two prior meetings, and with the win, Will Healy is now 5-0 against teams
from Conference USA's West Division.

With the win, Charlotte is now 4-1 at home this season and 10-3
under Will Healy.

Davidson Holds Off San Diego in Pioneer League Opener

Davidson Holds Off San Diego in Pioneer League Opener

DAVIDSON – It was the opener of the 2021 Pioneer Football
League slate for the Davidson. Opposing the Wildcats were the Toreros of San
Diego, a traditional league power who desperately wanted to avenge the pandemic-forced
spring 2021 season which saw Davidson knock off the four-time defending Pioneer
League champs to claim the conference championship for the first time ever. It
was Davidson who would take the day, as the Wildcats held off a late rally to
defeat the Toreros 28-16 at Richardson Stadium.

Davidson had what seemed to be a great start to the game,
forcing a three-and-out and taking over after a punt. The momentum was short-lived, however, and a bad pitch on the Wildcats' second play from scrimmage saw
the ball hit the turf, recovered by the San Diego defense. Two plays later,
Emilio Martinez ran in from thirteen yards out to give the visitors an early
7-0 lead.

The Wildcats went into full ball control mode later in the quarter,
though, marching eighty-three yards on sixteen plays on a drive that ended the
first quarter and began the second. By the time junior Dylan Sparks scored on a
one-yard run, Davidson had chewed off nearly nine minutes of clock and kept a
potent Torero offense on the sidelines.

It was the San Diego special teams that made the biggest
play in the second quarter, though. After coming up short on a run, the Toreros
chose to punt from midfield. The punt rolled down towards the goal line and was
batted out of bounds inside the one-yard line. The San Diego defense stepped up
on the next play, tackling the Davidson ball carrier in the end zone for a
safety and 9-7 lead. After the ensuing free kick, the Toreros sought to extend
their lead with a field goal, but the kick bounced off the right upright.

Davidson started the second half with eight straight rushing
plays before Louis Calosimo was able to find Eli Turner, Jr. lurking behind the
defense, and the two connected on a thirty-one-yard pass to get the Wildcats
inside the five-yard line. Two plays later, Mark McCurdy went around the left
side for the Davidson touchdown and the Wildcats had the lead for the first
time on the afternoon. Davidson had a chance to extend the lead later in the
quarter, but a bad snap on a field goal attempt gave the ball back to the Toreros
and saw the score stay at 14-9 going into the final quarter.

Davidson went into its bag of tricks on its next possession and
pulled out the halfback pass which Eli Turner, Jr. executed perfectly, tossing
a thirty-four-yard throw to Jalen Staples who went down at the five-yard line.
Turner finished off the drive two plays later on a toss sweep around the right
side of the line, extending the Wildcats lead to twelve points.

San Diego refused to give up and came within five points
after an eleven-yard touchdown pass from Mason Randall to Michael Carner. The
Toreros had another chance late in the quarter but was stopped on fourth down
by the tenacious Davidson defense. Looking to put the game on ice, Louis
Colosimo found Eli Turner, Jr. on a twenty-five-yard slant route for a
touchdown to cap the scoring, and Jordan Burrell picked off a late pass to seal
the deal for Davidson.

Foggie's Picks Lead 49ers to Victory

12:26 PM
Foggie's Picks Lead 49ers to Victory
Despite having only about half of the total yards as their counterparts, the Charlotte 49ers were able to rely on a strong defensive effort to hold on for a 17-7 win over Southern Miss Saturday afternoon at Richardson Stadium.

With the win, Charlotte sits at 4-4 on the season and 3-2 in Conference USA play. "I like where we are. Our guys have bought into what we're talking about," Coach Brad Lambert stated after the game.

While the offense struggled to move the ball most of the day against the top-CUSA Golden Eagle defensive squad, the Charlotte defense stepped up to the challenge and help Southern Miss out of the end zone for most of the day. When the Golden Eagles did find some offensive rhythm, the 49ers defense worked together to shut them down, forcing three turnovers in the first half as well as a missed field goal.

Senior linebacker Juwan Foggie leads
the NCAA with six interceptions

Juwan Foggie had a pick-six to end the first quarter and give the 49ers a fourteen-point lead. Foggie added another INT in the second quarter, giving him an FBS-leading six on the season. It was also Foggie's second interception return for a touchdown this season. "Coach had the perfect scheme drawn up. I just read the quarterback's eyes and made a play," Foggie said after the game.

Junior linebacker Jeff Gemmell was excited for how well his teammate was playing. "When guys like Foggie getting a pick-six, I went out there and hit like three or four of my teammates. When you're having fun and thankful for making good plays, you have that gratitude. That's really where it starts to kick in and you realize you have something special."

Safety Ben DeLuca had a team-high 12 tackles to lead the defense. The junior from Florida also added an interception to give the 49ers three on the day, tying a program record.

Redshirt senior Hasaan Klugh scored Charlotte's lone offensive touchdown on the day, a five-yard run that topped off an eleven-play, 75- yard drive early in the first quarter.

Lambert was happy about his team's performance. "All the way around, kicking game, offense, defense, the kids kept fighting. A good team win right here." Lambert was particularly excited about how his offense closed out the game. "We ran four straight plays to get that a first down and the games over. Everyone knew we were going to run it. They knew it, we knew it, everybody else knew it. And we got that first down. It's a good team win."

Charlotte (4-4, 3-2) plays out of conference next week at Tennessee (3-5) while Southern Miss (3-4, 2-2) hosts Marshall (5-2, 3-1).
