Appalachian State Become Bowl Eligible with 27-6 Win Over Georgia Southern

8:23 PM
BOONE – Thursday night games at Kidd-Brewer Stadium seem to be a yearly occurrence for the Appalachian State Mountaineers. For fans and players at "The Rock", a Thursday night game is a chance to showcase on national television against a top opponent. Getting a Thursday night home game against a rival is even better. When the Mountaineers took the field against rival Georgia Southern, a crowd of 23,110 erupted in cheers and stayed jubilant throughout the night as Appalachian State (6-4) became bowl-eligible with a 27-6 win over the visiting Eagles.

The first quarter was owned for the most part by Georgia Southern with the visiting Eagles controlling the ball for over ten minutes but only a field goal to show for it. Appalachian State finally got on the scoreboard halfway through the second quarter as Taylor Lamb found a wide-open Collin Reed in the end zone for a 23-yard score. The Mountaineers added to their lead with a 53-yard Chandler Staton field goal as time expired in the half, the first of two field goals for Staton on the night.

The second half played much like the first as the Appalachian State defense found ways to bottle up the option offense of Georgia Southern that had been leading the Sun Belt in rushing yards per game with over 200 yards a game. AJ Howard paced the Mountaineer defense with 7 tackles while Austin Exford, Rashaad Townes, and Tee Sims each had a sack that helped restrict the Eagles to only 111 rushing yards.

Taylor Lamb led a balanced Mountaineer offense with 161 yards passing on 7-13 passing with two touchdowns. Marcus Williams, filling in for an injured Jalin Moore, had 28 carries for 130 yards. Ike Lewis had three big catches, including a 30-yard catch on fourth down that set up a Daetrich Harrington score. Lewis added a touchdown for himself as well.

What the Coaches Said

Appalachian State coach Scott Satterfield

"It's amazing to get six wins again. To do it against Georgia Southern, a rival team, is great. I'm proud of our guys and how they bounced back from last week. We had a really focused week of practice this week. We came back from one of our worst performances of the year and had one of our best. I'm proud of our freshmen running backs. They knew what they needed to do. Our O-line has played really well, creating holes these last two games.

Notable North Carolinians

Marcus Williams (R-Fr., SouthWest Edgecombe) averaged 4.6 yards per carry while running for 130 yards in the game

Thomas Hennigan (Fr., Northwest Guilford) had a big 51-yard reception that set up a field goal early in the third quarter

Caleb Fuller (Sr., New Hanover) had 3 tackles on defense plus a 23-yard run on a fake punt to extend a drive in the third quarter.

Next Week

Appalachian State is off next week before traveling to Atlanta to take on Georgia State on November 25th while Georgia Southern hosts South Alabama in SunBelt conference action.

RB Elliott and Hillside Secures Thrilling Thursday Night Win

RB Elliott and Hillside Secures Thrilling Thursday Night Win

It was a chilly night in Raleigh and with the rain coming, teams geared up for Thursday night football.  One game in the Raleigh area lived up to the hype, as Hillside traveled to Cardinals Gibbons with both teams undefeated in conference play and Gibbons coming in with a 6-0 record, while Hillside was 5-1.

In the start of the game, it was the Hillside defense that was winning the battle, pushing Gibbons back on drives.  Several times Gibbons found themselves in second or third and long, playing into the hands of Hillside.

Hillside went up early with quarterback Randy Trice finding Caleb Harrington for a 28 yard touchdown, while running back Jamal Elliott scored a few plays later as well to put the Hornets up 14-0 in the second quarter.

Cardinals Gibbons fought back and got on the board with a 25 yard field goal late in the second quarter and eventually scored a few plays later on a muffed punt by Hillside, cutting the lead to 14-10 at halftime.

Elliott found the end zone again to start the third quarter.  But with both offenses somewhat struggling at times in the first half, that would change in the second half.

Cardinal Gibbons would find the end zone two more times after, taking their first lead after quarterback Stoneking found Biestek on a 17 yard pass.

Hillside would answer back with Elliott's third touchdown, while adding another one in the fourth quarter, pushing the lead to 34-22.

Gibbons wouldn't give up though, as the Hornets tried to use clock in the fourth quarter, but the Crusaders offense started clicking again.  Gibbons eventually scored with 1:23 to go in the game, cutting the Hornets lead to 34-29 and looking for the onside kick.

The Crusaders recovered and drove down the field, scoring one yard out and taking the 35-34 lead with 14.5 second left to go.  The momentum was there and Cardinal Gibbons was just seconds away from going to 7-0 on the season.

That is when running back Elliott showed up one last time, scoring his fourth and the go-ahead touchdown, returning the kickoff 99 yards to give Hillside the 41-35 victory Thursday night in Raleigh.

Thursday NC Preview: High School Football Week 5

We got three games on the schedule this coming Thursday in North Carolina, as Carolina Gridiron wants to give you a small preview of the matchups coming up.

Cherokee (3-1) vs #15 Smoky Mountain (3-0)

Cherokee comes rolling into town to take on Smoky Mountain Thursday night, as the Mustangs are undefeated on the season at 3-0.  The Braves are 2-0 on the road this season, with a recent win coming against Cosby (TN) last week, 42-0.  This is one of three straight road games for the Braves but they will have their hands full against a Smoky Mountain team that is averaging 164 yards passing and 237 rushing yards a game.  Senior Matthew Ridley has been averaging 199 yards per game on the ground, while quarterback Cole Hooper has completed 60 percent of his passes this season.

Ravenscroft (2-2) vs Trinity Christian (2-1)

Ravenscroft has been hitting the road early this season and now have another road game against Trinity Christian, who comes in on the season 2-1.  The Ravens have struggled at times against offensive teams, as they have given up over 40 points in both of their losses.  The Crusaders is coming off their own 40-0 dominate win against Fayetteville Christian last week.

Walkertown (1-3) vs West Stokes (3-1)

After starting off with a Week 1 win, Walkertown has lost three straight by a total of 139-14 and now hit the road to take on West Stokes.  The Wolfpack have struggled offensively this season and will need to have one of the better games early on this season to come away with the road win.  West Stokes have now won two straight after their home loss against Mount Airy and certainly have the players to put up points, as they have averaged 28.25 points per game.  These two teams met up last year, as West Stokes took home the narrow 24-21 win on the road.
