With the win, the Camels finish .500 in conference play in their first season in the CAA while the Aggies finished winless in the CAA.

Jalen Kelsey made a 10-yard touchdown pass from Hajj-Malik Williams, followed by a successful PAT kick by Williams. Shortly after, Tai Goode scored another touchdown for the Camels, catching a 9-yard pass from Williams, with another successful PAT kick by Williams.

In the second quarter, the Camels extended their lead with Hajj-Malik Williams catching a 24-yard touchdown pass from Brandon Fitez, followed by a successful PAT kick by Caleb Dowden. BUIES CREEK – Ryan O’Connor threw for four touchdowns and Khalil Dawsey picked off two passes, leading No. 8 Delaware over Campbell 45-7 on Saturday at Barker-Lane Stadium.

The Blue Hens (8-2, 6-1 CAA) stayed atop the CAA standings, dealing Campbell (4-6, 3-4 CAA) its third straight loss.

Delaware built a 21-0 first quarter lead on two O’Connor TD passes along with a 100-yard pick-6 from Dawsey. Campbell drove into Delaware territory on each of its first four possessions, but a pair of turnovers turned into 14 UD points.

O’Connor added two more touchdown tosses in the third to give the Blue Hens a 38-0 lead before Hajj-Malik Williams’ keeper put Campbell on the board.

O’Connor completed 19-of-31 passes for 246 yards, tossing one interception, with two TD throws going to Joshua Youngblood, who hauled in four catches for 53 yards, leading a Delaware offense that outgained CU 406-288. Jordan Townsend collected five catches for 92 yards and a touchdown, while Quincy Watson rushed for 40 yards on 11 carries.

Jackson Taylor and Keeno Arrington tallied eight tackles apiece on the defensive side, while Ty Davis added six tackles, including one of the Blue Hens’ six for loss on the day.

Campbell took control of the game early, building a commanding 28-7 halftime lead. McDowell played a pivotal role in this surge, finding the end zone twice during the first half. The Camels managed to score on four consecutive possessions after their opening drive had stalled.

The Vikings come into the game at 1-3 after a close loss to Shaw last Sunday. The Golden Bulls have been outscoring their opponents 29-13 through the first four weeks of the season. A balanced backfield, led by Tim Newman, Jr., Jacob Newman, and Shydem McCullough have averaged 187 rushing yards per game coming into this week’s game. Benari Black and Jack Smith lead a linebacker corps that have given opposing offenses fits so far. ECSU head coach Marcus Hilliard, himself a Vikings alumnus, will look to his sophomore signal caller to try and find a weakness in the JCSU defense. Dual-threat quarterback Chase Williams leads the Vikings in passing yards and rushing touchdowns. Demorian Smith and Teonne Porter lead an ECSU defense that is giving up less than twenty points per game so far this season.

Both teams’ offenses came out with to good plays to get to midfield but had miscues that ended their opening drives. Campbell got a brief jolt of energy when VJ Wilkins’s great catch and run to get the Camels into Elon territory, but the drive fizzled out and the Camels were forced to settle for a 32-yard Caleb Dowden field goal to get on the scoreboard for the first time for the evening and the lone score of the first quarter. The bright spot was quickly overshadowed when Campbell linebacker Antoine Sampah was carted off the field with an apparent leg injury. The Camels' defense certainly missed his presence as the Phoenix were able to drive deep into Campbell territory and take the lead on a ten-yard rushing touchdown by Jalen Hampton.

Campbell had stopped Elon and was about to force a long FG try, but a personal foul penalty extended the drive and gave the Phoenix a fresh set of downs. Two plays later, Jalen Hampton dragged several Campbell defenders into the end zone for his second touchdown of the night. The next Elon drive was a repeat as another unnecessary roughness penalty gave Elon a first down in Campbell territory and Elon was able to score two plays after the penalty. Christian Da Silva took a ball around the left side of the line and was brought down at the one-yard-line and Jalen Hampton punched it in on the next play for his third score of the quarter.

Elon came out of the half determined to extend their lead and even gambled on a fourth down at the Campbell thirty-yard line to keep the momentum going, but a pass missed its mark and was picked off by Campbell’s Monchovia Gaffney. The Camels took over and went to work and a catch and run by Chaney Fitzgerald got the Camels into the red zone. After an intentional grounding call and sack pushed the Camels back, Hajj-Malik Williams looked to make up for his miscues on the previous two plays and scooted twenty-two yards for Campbell’s first touchdown of the evening. The celebration was short-lived, however, as the Camels found themselves in the same position as earlier drives with a personal foul penalty extending an Elon drive that was capped off with a Jalen Hampton rushing touchdown two plays later. Hampton’s fourth touchdown of the game gave the Phoenix a 28-10 lead heading into the final quarter.

The Camels refused to give up in the final quarter and CJ Tillman’s forced fumble was recovered by Cam Booker, giving the home team a sign of life. When Hajj-Malik Williams hit VJ Wilkins in the endzone, the Camels faithful erupted. The ensuing two-point conversion was good and the Camels, desperate for the comeback, found themselves down ten with eight minutes left. The Campbell defense stepped up on the next drive, forcing an Elon punt. The Camels offense was quick on the draw on the ensuing possession, moving eighty-seven yards in six plays. Brandon Fitez’s spectacular grab gave the ball to the Camels deep in Elon territory and a pass interference call in the end zone set the Camels up at the two-yard line with six-and-a-half minutes left in the game. NaQuari Rogers’s two-yard touchdown on the next play made it a one-score game, but a missed PAT attempt kept it a four-point affair. Although the Campbell defense was able to give the ball back to the offense for one last chance at victory, the clock was not on the Camels’ side as time ran out before the Camels could find the end zone one last time.

Standout Players

Jalen Hampton led all rushers with 169 yards while rushing for four touchdowns. Hajj-Malik Williams was 33 of 44 for 367 yards and a touchdown. VJ Wilkins led all receivers with ten receptions and 114 receiving yards. Defensively, Bo Sanders and Monchovia Gaffney each had an interception for their respective squads while leading their squads with ten tackles apiece.

Elon Coach Tony Trisciani on how his team played offensively: “I was real happy with how came we out of the gate and played. We knew we had to assert ourselves upfront. We knew that that's where we needed to win, especially with weather like this, it would be important wanted to run the football.” On defense, “I thought we did a good job getting to the quarterback position to force him to make some decisions and the get ball the perimeter.”

Campbell Coach Mike Minter on his team’s penalties: “You basically have all your penalties are personal fouls. And all of their points come off of those penalties. And so that's the one thing that sticks out to me in that ball game, you know, third and long and we’ll get a personal foul, third and long, we get a personal foul, third down, we get a personal foul. That's just sickening when you look at it. So we gotta learn from that and understand you know who refereeing the game and understand what type of game is gonna be.” On his team’s finish to the game: “We look at, you know you got a chance for the five-minute drill and we had the five-minute drill going on again. They were able to convert a couple of first downs and kind of ran the clock down a little bit and we just didn't have enough time on the clock. But you just can't start the way we started. We spot them twenty-one points and it's 21-3 and then now you decide to play football, you can't do that.”

The Elon Phoenix and the Campbell Fighting Camels are set to face off in an exciting CAA matchup today at Barker-Lane Stadium in Buies Creek. This match-up promises to be a thrilling encounter as both teams have shown great potential in their previous games and are looking to move up the CAA standings. Elon has had a mixed start to their season, falling in close matchups to FBS Wake Forest and a strong NC FCS Gardner-Webb squad before winning their CAA opener against North Carolina A&T last Saturday. Defensively, the Phoenix are coming off of a strong effort where they held the Aggies to an impressive 140 yards of total offense. The Phoenix defense, led by defensive back, and former Grimsley High standout, Caleb Curtain along with Asheville’s Marvin Pearson is going to need another strong effort to take down a Campbell team that is averaging over forty points a game.

Campbell’s Hajj-Malik Williams is averaging over 250 yards passing per game over the first three weeks of the season and has thrown for five touchdowns without any interceptions. The senior signal-caller has also rushed for three touchdowns as part of a three-headed running game alongside running backs NaQuari Rogers and former Charlotte Catholic star Lamagea McDowell who have each also rushed for three touchdowns.

This game is crucial for both teams. For the Phoenix, a win could help turn their season around and boost their morale as they head into a stretch of games against ranked FCS teams. For the Camels, another win would solidify their strong start to the season and keep their momentum going in their first season in the CAA.

Mars Hill Hosts Barton in Battle of Unbeatens

Barton travels to take on Mars Hill in a South Atlantic battle of unbeatens with important divisional implications this early in the season. Kickoff is set for 1 pm and will be broadcast on FloSports. Former Eastern Randolph star Jordan Terrell, who was named the national offensive player of the week and leads all rushers in the country with 194 yards per game, leads a Barton offense that has averaged over thirty points a game and knocked off Division 1 Davidson two weeks ago. Mars Hill is coming off a resounding 35-20 victory over Catawba, powered by standout performances from North Carolina products Jon Gullette (Reagan) and Simeon Thompson (Erwin).

ECU Looks For First Win of Season Against Gardner-Webb

Gardner-Webb travels to Greenville to take on their second FBS foe in a month in an East Carolina squad looking to avoid an 0-4 start to the season. The Runnin’ Bulldogs lost a close two-point matchup on the road at Tennessee State last week after knocking off in-state FCS rival Elon the previous week. The Pirates had a lead on the road at Appalachian State last week before faltering in the second half. Both teams are featuring strong running games with Narii Gaither leading a ground-focused Gardner-Webb offense and Rahjai Harris pacing a balanced Pirates offense. Kickoff is set for 6 pm and will be broadcast on ESPN+.

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. — In a thrilling clash at Kessler Stadium, Campbell University's NaQuari Rogers took center stage, rushing for an impressive 152 yards and notching three touchdowns, guiding the Camels to a 45-31 victory over Monmouth on Saturday.

Camels Secure First CAA Win

Campbell (2-1, 1-1 CAA) celebrated their first Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) victory of the season, while simultaneously inflicting Monmouth's (1-2, 1-1 CAA) inaugural conference defeat.

Rogers Shines in Career Performance

NaQuari Rogers, a sophomore hailing from Virginia Beach, Va., had a standout performance, carrying the ball a career-high 21 times for 152 yards and three crucial touchdowns. His go-ahead 32-yard sprint with 9:37 left in the fourth quarter was a game-changer, capping off an outstanding day for the young talent. Rogers had already made his mark in the first and third quarters with two more touchdowns, propelling Campbell to its first lead of the game at 24-23 with 6:49 remaining in the third.

Back-and-Forth Battle

Monmouth had taken an early 23-7 lead in the second quarter, notably highlighted by Jaden Shirden's 35-yard touchdown.

However, Campbell responded emphatically, reeling off 24 consecutive points, which included Chaney Fitzgerald's 12-yard touchdown reception and Caleb Dowden's 42-yard score just before halftime. Rogers added his second touchdown, followed by a three-yard keeper from Hajj-Malik Williams, establishing a 31-23 advantage for the Camels.

Monmouth's Shirden, who exhibited an impressive performance throughout the game, tied it at 31-31 early in the fourth quarter with a 22-yard touchdown catch.

Campbell Seals the Deal

Rogers had the last word, dashing for a 32-yard touchdown, and Chris McKay, Jr. followed suit with a 26-yard scamper, ultimately securing the Camels' victory at 45-31.

Shirden ended the day with a remarkable 165 yards rushing, in addition to four catches for 31 yards.

Second-Half Dominance

While Monmouth held a 23-17 lead at halftime, the Camels completely turned the tables in the second half, outscoring the Hawks 28-8. Campbell's offense piled up an impressive 249 yards in the second half alone, including 118 rushing yards in the final quarter.

Campbell's defense was anchored by CJ Tillman, who tallied 10 tackles, with Ed Dennis and Monchovia Gaffney adding seven stops each. Keevan Bailey and D'Marcus Harrington contributed with interceptions in the second half.

For Monmouth, Marquez McCray completed 19-of-36 passes for 211 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions, while Dymere Miller caught nine passes for 138 yards.

Campbell will return home on September 23, hosting Elon for Parent's Weekend in another crucial CAA contest, aiming to build on their newfound momentum in the conference. 

DOVER, DE – Four different Camels found the end zone and Campbell closed the 2022 season with a 34-7 nonconference win over Delaware State on Saturday at Alumni Stadium.

Hajj-Malik Williams completed 13-of-24 passes for 211 yards and a TD, while eight different Campbell (5-6) receivers caught passes. Austin Hite made four grabs for 72 yards and a touchdown, and Chaney Fitzgerald posted four grabs for a game-high 90 yards. NaQuari Rogers, meanwhile, rushed for 47 yards and a touchdown. 

Campbell limited Delaware State (5-6) to 166 yards of total offense, and just 74 yards passing, registering a season-best 11 tackles for loss.

CJ Tillman tallied a career-high 16 tackles with 3.0 stops for loss, including a sack, while Gabe Holmes made eight tackles with a sack and a fumble recovery. Monchovia Gaffney also notched two sacks with a forced fumble and five tackles. 

Thomas Bertrand-Hudon led Delaware State with 139 yards rushing on 28 carries with a touchdown, and Rahkeem Smith totaled 65 yards receiving on two catches. Brooks Parker made five tackles with 2.0 TFLs, including a sack for the Hornets. 

The Camels took a 27-0 lead into the halftime break, with Caleb Dowden’s 38-yard field goal as time expired, his second make of the half. 

Campbell took its opening drive nine plays for 81 yards (3:54), finding the end zone on NaQuari Rogers’ 35-yard touchdown run, spinning off a Delaware State defender. 

Lamagea McDowell punched in a five-yard TD run and Austin Hite hauled in a 27-yard score in the second quarter. 

Mike Swain’s third-quarter blocked punt and recovery in the end zone gave Campbell a 34-0 lead. 

Bertrand-Hudon’s five-yard touchdown with 13:59 remaining put DSU on the board and gave the game its final score. 

Campbell finishes the season at 5-6 overall, while Delaware State dropped to 5-6 on the year. The Camels finished the year with a win for the first time since 2013. 

GREENSBORO – Bhayshul Tuten rushed for 235 yards and two touchdowns, helping North Carolina A&T erase an 18-point halftime deficit to defeat Campbell 45-38 on Saturday at Truist Stadium.

The Aggies moved to 5-3 on the year and 3-0 in Big South games, while Campbell suffered its first league loss, falling to 4-4 overall and 2-1 in conference play as the teams combined for 1,101 yards, 566 for A&T and 535 for CU.

Six of A&T’s touchdowns came on plays of 35 or more yards, including 70 and 42-yard runs from Tuten, who ran for 123 yards in the second half. 

Wesley Graves’ six-yard score gave the Aggies a 45-38 lead with 8:54 to play. 

The Camels scored touchdowns on their first four drives, all in the first quarter, with QB Hajj-Malik Williams running for two and passing for two more, pushing Campbell to a 28-10 lead. 

After a scoreless second quarter, A&T outscored the Camels 20-3 in the third. 

Williams passed for a school-record 426 yards, completing 31-of-47 passes and two touchdowns, adding two more rushing scores. 

Austin Hite hauled in four catches for 103 yards, a career-high, including a 68 touchdown grab in the second quarter. Chaney Fitzgerald made nine catches for 53 yards, while Bryant Barr and Julian Hill both registered three catches with 88 and 80 yards. Hill added a touchdown catch, also rushing for a score.

Jalen Fowler completed 12-of-21 passes for 233 yards and two touchdowns for the Aggies, while Zachary Leslie made four catches for 124 yards and two TDs. 

CJ Tillman posted eight stops for the Camels, including 1.0 tackle for loss, while Josh Johnson added seven tackles with 1.0 TFL and a pass breakup. D’Marcus Harrington also notched an interception to go along with three tackles. 

Tywayne Williams led the A&T defense with eight tackles, while Jacob Roberts tallied a third-quarter pick-6, adding two tackles.

Campbell wraps up a three-game road stretch, heading to new Big South member Bryant on November 5. The Camels return home for their home finale on November 12 against Gardner-Webb for the 2022 North Carolina East/West Barbecue Bowl and Senior Day. North Carolina A&T continues a three-game homestand, hosting Norfolk State next Saturday at 12 p.m.

BUIES CREEK – Campbell scored 34 unanswered points and went
on to defeat Robert Morris 41-10 Saturday at Barker-Lane Stadium.

Hajj-Malik Williams threw for three scores and the Camels
sacked Robert Morris quarterbacks six times as Campbell (4-2, 2-0 Big South)
won its third-straight game.

Robert Morris (0-6, 0-2) finished with just 188 total yards,
105 coming on two plays. Campbell rolled up 516 yards of total offense –
marking the 400-yard mark for the fourth-straight outing.

Williams completed 26-of-35 passes for 249 yards. Ezeriah
Anderson had seven receptions for 91 yards and a score, while Chaney Fitzgerald
finished with four catches for 66 yards and two TDs. RJ Jackson finished with
three receptions for 38 yards and a touchdown.

Lamagea McDowell led Campbell on the ground with 56 yards on
nine rushes and a score. Campbell ran 94 plays to just 51 for the Colonials.

Campbell held RMU to just eight rushing yards, which is tied
for the second-lowest ground total allowed in Campbell’s Division I era (since
2008). The Camels gave up just three rushing yards in a 39-9 win at Davidson in
2015.

Defensive end Brevin Allen had three sacks and an
interception in the opening half, while Gabe Holmes led the Camels with six
total tackles.

Zach Tanner completed 5-of-11 passes for 66 yards and Corbin
LaFrance 5-of-16 for 38 yards for the Colonials.

Robert Morris went in front in the first quarter on a
64-yard halfback pass from Jamal Hill to Parker Fetterman. Jayson Jenkins’ PAT
gave Robert Morris a 7-0 lead with 8:44 left in the period, marking the first
time the Camels trailed at home this season.

Williams connected with Fitzgerald on a 27-yard TD pass to
bring the Camels even with 5:36 left in the period.

RMU moved back in front 10-7 on Jenkins’ 44-yard field goal
– which was set up by a 41-yard pass completion from Tanner to Kimon
O’Sullivan, which gave the Colonials a first down at the Campbell 11. However,
the Camels forced an incompletion and Allen sacked Tanner on third down for
force the field goal attempt.

Campbell responded with 27 unanswered points to take a 34-10
lead at the break. Williams hit Fitzgerald on a 36-yard scoring pass on the
first play of the second quarter.

McDowell broke through the line on a 4th-and-one at the
Colonials 34 to make it 21-10 with 9:24 to play in the half. Williams then hit
Anderson with a 14-yard TD pass and Caleb Dowden added a pair of field goals to
stretch the lead to 24 at intermission.

Campbell outgained RMU 344-134 in the first half and ran 30
more plays than the Colonials.

In the second half, the Camels held Robert Morris to just 54
yards of total offense.

Freshman QB Chad Mascoe connected with Jackson on a 17-yard
scoring pass with 12:55 left in the fourth quarter for the final margin.

Campbell returns to action next Saturday with a 2:00 p.m.

BUIES CREEK – Campbell rolled up a season-high 563 yards of total offense and defeated North Carolina Central 48-18 Saturday at Barker-Lane Stadium.

Campbell (2-2) scored on six of its seven first-half drives and hit season highs for points (48), total offense, first downs (33) and rushing yards (315) against a previously unbeaten Eagle team that entered the contest ranked eighth in the nation in scoring defense (13.5).

Bryant Barr ran for a career-high 135 yards on 23 carries and one touchdown for the Camels, who ran 83 plays to 64 for the visitors.  NaQuari Rogers added 78 rushing yards and one score, while Lamagea McDowell scored twice on the ground.

Hajj-Malik Williams completed 22-of-33 passes for 248 yards and added 46 on the ground with one rushing TD.  Jalen Kelsey led CU with five receptions for 47 yards and recovered a blocked punt for a touchdown.

Davius Richard completed 21-of-35 passes with two interceptions and a pair of TDs for NC Central (4-1), which ranked fifth in the FCS in scoring offense (43.2) but was held to just three scores despite finishing with 390 total yards.  Richard led the Eagles with 37 rushing yards, while Devin Smith had five catches for 67 yards and two scores.

Aaron Maddox, CJ Tillman and Myles Rowser led Campbell with seven tackles each.  Isaiah Lawson had 12 tackles for the Eagles, while Jason Chambers added 11 and Khalil Baker 10.

Campbell compiled 397 yards of total offense before the break, including 205 on the ground.

The Camels took the opening kickoff and drove 84 yards on 14 plays, capped by McDowell’s four-yard rush.  After forcing a punt, Campbell again drove into the red zone to set up Caleb Dowden’s 30-yard field goal.

Myles Rowser intercepted a Richard pass and the Camels drove 60 yards in six plays.  McDowell finished the march with a 10-yard scoring run for a 17-0 lead with 11:44 left in the second quarter.

Williams pushed the margin to 24-0 on a 17-yard QB keeper with 7:25 to play in the half.

The Eagles got on the scoreboard when Richard connected with Smith on a 28-yard TD pass.  However, Campbell stopped NCCU on the two-point conversion attempt.

CU answered Central’s only first-half score with a 75-yard drive that Barr finished with a 24-yard rush.

Ed Dennis picked off Richard’s pass and returned it 26 yards to give the Camels a first down on the NCCU 34 with 55 seconds to play.  Dowden’s 21-yard field goal pushed the halftime lead to 34-6.

Barr ran for 113 yards on 16 carries in the first half alone.  Williams completed 13-of-18 passes for 192 yards before the break as the Camels converted 5-of-5 red zone opportunities.

NCCU scored on the first play of the fourth quarter on Smith’s 22-yard TD catch, but the Camels responded with a 9-play, 65-yard march that Rogers completed with a 35-yard run.

Alex Santiago blocked a Juan Velarde punt and Kelsey picked it up at the goal line to push the margin to 48-12 with 9:06 to play.  

Richard’s 1-yard QB keeper rounded out the scoring.

Notable North Carolinians

Bryant Barr (Eastern Guilford) – the graduate running back ran for a career-high 135 yards on 23 carries and one touchdown.

Lamagea McDowell (Charlotte Catholic, Hunter Huss) – the junior running back scored twice on the ground to give Campbell an early lead.

Devin Smith (Durham Riverside) – the sophomore receiver finished with five catches for 67 yards, including two touchdowns.

Isaiah Lawson (Butler) – the sophomore linebacker led the NCCU defense with 12 tackles, including a stop for a loss, with a pass break-up.

MOON TOWNSHIP, PA. – Nick Bisceglia’s go-ahead 25-yard field goal in overtime lifted Robert Morris over visiting Campbell 20-17 in the 2021 season finale for both teams at Joe Walton Stadium.

RMU ends its first full season in the Big South at 4-6 overall and 3-5 in league play, while Campbell dropped to 3-8 on the year and 2-5 in conference games with its sixth straight loss. 

The Camels forced overtime with a 10 play, 82 drive late in the fourth quarter, tying the game at 17-all with 4:00 to play on Dylan Earney’s 27-yard touchdown pass to Jalen Kelsey. 

Nearing midfield on the ensuing RMU possession, Josh McNeely deflected a pass into the hands of Keshawn Thompson for his second interception of the season, returning the ball to the Camels with 1:21 to play in regulation. 

Campbell inched into the red zone with a six-play drive, setting up a field goal try for the win with two seconds on the clock. Isaac Riffle, who drilled a career-long 47-yard field goal to close the first half, booted a 29 yarder through, but a facemask penalty pushed the Camels back, and the 44 yard try missed wide right, sending the game to overtime. 

Getting the ball first in overtime, RMU drove to the CU eight-yard line, but stalled, settling for Bisceglia’s eventual game-winner. 

Campbell looked to match after CJ Freeman pushed to the RMU 7, but Riffle’s 24 yard try missed wide right. 

Earney passed for 300 yards, completing 25-of-39 attempts with two touchdowns and an interception, while Dontae Crow hauled in 104 yards on seven grabs with a TD. Freeman tacked on 60 yards on the ground. 

Caleb Snead, who added another record to his 2021 season, becoming CU’s single season leader in receiving yards (1,067), passing Aaron Blockmon’s (2015-18) mark (1,038), collected seven passes for 70 yards. 

Kelsey also totaled 65 yards with a score on four catches for the Camels. 

Dorian Jones totaled nine tackles for CU, while Darion Slade made eight stops, including a tackle for loss with a fumble recovery. 

Alijah Jackson paced RMU with 132 yards rushing on 23 carries, while George Martin passed for 173 yards and a TD on 19-of-30 tries with an interception. James Westry also recorded 58 yards and a touchdown on six catches for the Colonials. 

Miles Hayes made nine tackles for RMU, while Jamar Shegog registered 2.0 stops for loss and five tackles. 

BOILING SPRINGS – It was the inaugural BBQ bowl between Big South rivals Gardner-Webb and Campbell taking place at Spangler Stadium on Friday night. At stake were bragging rights and a catered barbecue meal for the winning squad. Both teams traded offensive and defensive blows for three and a half quarters, knotted at 28 with four minutes left on the clock. Campbell stepped up on both sides of the ball over the last four minutes, finding the end zone twice on their way to a 42-28 win, and claimed the right to take the brand new trophy back to Buies Creek for the next year.

The Meat

After both teams started slowly, trading punts and turnovers, it was Campbell who broke onto the scoreboard first. Capping an eight-play drive, Bryant Barr (Eastern Guilford) punched it in from two yards out to give the Camels an early 7-0 lead. It was the Gardner-Webb defense that got the Runnin' Bulldogs on the scoreboard first with linebacker William McRainey (West Brunswick) picking up a fumble and racing seventy-one yards to the house for the scoop-and-score to tie the game at 7-7.

The second quarter saw both teams turning on their offenses. Wiley Hartley, on fire since stepping into the starting quarterback role due to injury, threw the first of his two touchdown passes early in the quarter, finding Caleb Snead in the back of the end zone. Gardner-Webb struck back quickly with Narii Gaither rushing for fifty-five of his game-high 150 yards on the way to the end zone to tie the game again. Gardner-Webb then went on to take the lead on a one-yard pass from Bailey Fisher to Bryson Duckworth to seemingly give the Runnin' Bulldogs a 21-14 halftime lead, but Campbell was able to go seventy-five yards in only fifty-two seconds with Hartley finding Julian Hill (Pine Forest) over the middle for a thirty-nine-yard score to cap off the quick drive to send the game into the half at 21-21.

Both teams' running backs found the end zone during the third quarter. Narii Gaither rushed twenty-two yards for his second score of the night to give Gardner-Webb a 28-21 lead, but Bryant Barr would not let Camels go without a score, punching the ball in from a yard out, his second of the night, and setting up what would be a momentous fourth quarter. Barr added the go-ahead score, his third of the night, at the 3:53 mark to give the Camels a 35-28 lead. After the Campbell defense held Gardner-Webb on fourth down, CJ Freeman's twenty-three-yard scamper sealed the deal and secure the 42-28 win for the visitors.

North Carolina barbecue legend Bob Garner was on hand to debut the new trophy at halftime and Big South Commissioner Kyle Kallander had the privilege of handing over the trophy to the victorious Camels in a postgame ceremony.

Campbell (3-2, 2-0) will host #25 Monmouth next Saturday at Barker-Lane Stadium while Gardner-Webb (2-4, 0-2) has an open week before hosting Robert Morris at Spangler Stadium for Homecoming on October 23.

BUIES CREEK – Campbell piled up 580 yards of total offense and logged a school-record 10 takeaways, downing visiting Presbyterian 72-0 Saturday at Barker-Lane Stadium. 

Campbell (1-2) scored touchdowns on eight of its first nine possessions, shutting out the Blue Hose (2-1), who came into Saturday averaging 76.0 points per game. CU forced turnovers on six of PC’s first eight drives, ending the night matching a school record with seven interceptions (at Carthage, 9/27/08) to go along with three fumble recoveries.

The Camels’ 72 points are the most in a single game against an NCAA Division I opponent, and second-most all-time, picking up the program’s first shutout since 2018 (9/22/18 vs. Shaw).

Wiley Hartley, making his first career start at quarterback in place of an injured Hajj-Malik Williams, tossed six touchdowns with 342 passing yards, both CU single-game records, completing 22-of-30 passes. Dylan Earney added 82 yards passing, completing 4-of-5 passes in relief, giving CU a school single-game record 424 passing yards. After a record-setting night in his first career start, Hartley was named honorable mention FCS Performer of the Week by the College Football Performance Awards.

Austin Hite led 12 different Camels who caught passes, including six who hauled in touchdowns, with five catches for 93 yards and a score. Caleb Snead found the end zone for the fourth time in three games, making four catches for 43 yards. Jordan Goco also grabbed a 60-yard TD, one of five Camels to score their first career touchdowns in the win.

Michael Jamerson rushed for two touchdowns, both in the first quarter, totaling 101 yards on the ground on 22 carries. 

Peyton Woulard collected Campbell’s first interception of the night and added a team-high eight tackles for CU, while DJ Charles made five stops with a pick. 

JT Whitmore also collected 3.0 sacks and forced a pair of fumbles, while Brevin Allen added 2.5 tackles for loss, including 2.0 sacks. Freshman linebacker CJ Tillman also returned an interception for a TD in the fourth quarter, adding four tackles, including a stop for loss. 

PC quarterback Ren Hefley, sacked seven times in the loss, completed 20-of-39 passes for 145 yards while throwing six interceptions. Keegan Holloran led the PC defense with a game-high 13 tackles. 

The win marked Campbell’s third straight in the series over the Blue Hose.

Before starting Big South play at North Alabama on October 2, Campbell will have an open date on September 25.

The trip to Florence, Ala., which will count as a Big South Conference game for the first time in the series, will be the first of two straight road matchups for the Camels to start league play, also heading to Gardner-Webb on October 9.

Campbell returns to Buies Creek for its Big South home opener on October 16, hosting No. 20 Monmouth.
