ACC Clash, NCAA Playoffs Highlight Thanksgiving Weekend

6:29 AM

Saturday night’s ACC Network game from Carter-Finley Stadium in Raleigh will be the 113th meeting between the NC State Wolfpack and the North Carolina Tar Heels. The Tar Heels, recovering from a loss at Clemson, are preparing to face their rivals in the final game of the 2023 regular season. The Tar Heels’ offense, which averages 38.1 points per game, is the 12th highest nationally, and they’ve been successful on third downs, converting 49.7% of them. Quarterback Drake Maye and running back Omarion Hampton have been key players, with Maye throwing at least one touchdown pass in 10 of the 11 games this season and Hampton rushing for 100 yards in six consecutive games.

They are one of only four teams in the Power 5 that have won eight or more games in each of the last four seasons. Their defense, which leads the ACC in total defense and scoring defense vs. league opponents, has been particularly impressive. In the last nine games, the Wolfpack defense has allowed just 88.5 rushing yards per game. During that span, three opponents have rushed for less than 100 yards. This game promises to be a thrilling end to the regular season, with both teams bringing their A-game to the field for bragging rights and a claim to best FBS team in the state.

Freshman quarterback Jaylen King, a finalist for the Jerry Rice Award, has gone 5-1 in his first six career starts, including leading the Bulldogs to a 38-34 upset victory over #13/14 UT Martin. On the receiving end, Devin Smith and Joaquin Davis have been key contributors, with 505 and 404 receiving yards respectively. On the defensive side, Jayden Flaker leads the team with 74 total tackles and 4.5 sacks. With a rare appearance in the FCS playoffs, NCCU is poised to give a tough fight to the University of Richmond.

Honoring NCCFB Legend Armanti Edwards

App State vs. Georgia Southern: App State will host Georgia Southern at Kidd Brewer Stadium in Boone in a game that will be broadcast on ESPNU Saturday afternoon at 3:30. App State leads the series 21-16-1 overall and 14-5-1 in Boone. Leading the Mountaineers’ offense is quarterback Joey Aguilar with 2,975 passing yards and 29 touchdowns, receiver Kaedin Robinson with 45 catches for 609 yards and 8 touchdowns, and running back Nate Noel with 787 rushing yards and 5 touchdowns. Andrew Parker Jr. paces the App State defense with 98 tackles. The game will be a significant event, as it's not only the regular-season finale but also Senior Day, and the retirement of QB Armanti Edwards’ No. 14 jersey will take place at halftime. App State is also vying for a Sun Belt Championship Game berth. The team needs to beat Georgia Southern and have JMU win at Coastal Carolina to advance to face West champ Troy on Dec. 2.

7:30 PM

DURHAM – O'Kelly-Riddick Stadium in Durham was the stage for an electrifying college football showdown on Saturday night, as the North Carolina Central University Eagles battled the Campbell University Camels. In a game that kept fans on both sides anxious for the entire evening, the Eagles secured a nail-biting victory in overtime, winning 49-48.

The crowd of 8,410 spectators witnessed an unforgettable game that saw both teams trade blows throughout the night. The Eagles, now standing at 4-1 on the season, extended their home game win streak to eight with this thrilling victory. They will continue their journey as they face Elon University on October 7th at 2 p.m. Campbell dropped to 2-3 and will look to bounce back in a road game against Hampton next Saturday.

Davius Richard Shines for NCCU

Senior quarterback Davius Richard was the star of the night for the Eagles. Richard displayed his versatility by completing 21 of 34 passes for 265 yards, including a crucial touchdown. But it was his performance on the ground that left a lasting mark on the game. Richard scored an astonishing four rushing touchdowns, breaking NCCU's career rushing touchdown record with a total of 33. This remarkable feat also tied the single-game rushing touchdown record for the Eagles.

The game began with both teams trading early blows. Campbell's quarterback, Hajj-Malik Williams, connected with Lamagea McDowell for an 11-yard touchdown pass, giving the Camels a 7-0 lead. NCCU quickly responded with a 51-yard pass from Richard to Devin Smith, setting up Richard's 5-yard rushing touchdown to level the score at 7-7.

Eagles Overcome Deficit

Despite the Camels taking a commanding 35-14 lead in the second quarter, NCCU rallied back with determination. Richard, along with teammates Luke Bracey and Latrell Collier, found the end zone in the second half, making it a nail-biting contest. Sophomore linebacker Jayden Flaker led the Eagles' defense with an impressive 15 tackles, including a crucial stop in the third quarter that set up a game-tying touchdown.

In a game that came down to the wire, it was NCCU's special teams that made the difference in overtime. Senior defensive tackle Karfa Kaba blocked a crucial point-after-touchdown (PAT) attempt, giving the Eagles the opportunity to seal the game. Adrian Olivo capitalized on this opportunity, securing the win for NCCU with a converted PAT.

Campbell's Strong Offensive Showing

Campbell's offense put on an impressive display, amassing 269 yards of total offense in the first half alone. Quarterback Hajj-Malik Williams threw for 302 yards and five touchdowns, connecting frequently with Jalen Kelsey, who had a career-high 172 yards receiving, including two stunning touchdown receptions of 70 and 65 yards.

The Camels had a chance to clinch victory in overtime, with Williams connecting with Ezeriah Anderson for a 13-yard touchdown pass. However, the blocked PAT proved costly, as NCCU's Latrell Collier swiftly carried the ball into the end zone, securing the Eagles' dramatic win.

A Game to Remember

The game between NCCU and Campbell will undoubtedly go down as one of the most thrilling college football matchups of the season. With both teams displaying remarkable skill and determination, it's a testament to the excitement and unpredictability that college football can offer. As the season progresses, fans can only hope for more games as captivating as this one.

Duke's College Gameday Clash Leads Saturday Schedule

4:00 PM

The gridiron at Brooks Field at Wallace Wade Stadium is set to ignite as the No. 17 Duke Blue Devils gear up to host the No. 11 Notre Dame Fighting Irish in a high-stakes showdown under the Saturday night lights. Kickoff for this epic battle is slated for 7:30 p.m., and fans across the nation can catch all the action live on ABC.

This year's eagerly anticipated contest marks the eighth gridiron meeting between Duke and Notre Dame, with the Fighting Irish holding a 5-2 series lead. Duke's first triumph over the Fighting Irish dates back to December 2, 1961, when they secured a resounding 37-13 victory on their home turf. As for recent history, Notre Dame enters the fray on the heels of two consecutive victories, including a convincing 27-13 win during their last encounter on September 12, 2020.

Duke's recent triumph over Connecticut added to the excitement, marking their fourth consecutive in-season win—a feat not seen since 1970. The Blue Devils also made history by kickstarting the season with four consecutive 20-plus point victories. In the wake of their impressive performances, Duke has risen to No. 17 in the Associated Press poll and No. 16 in the USA Today Coaches' polls. This ranking signifies the team's highest national standing since October 25, 1994, when they held the No. 16 spot.

When it comes to winning the turnover battle, Duke has demonstrated prowess under the guidance of head coach Mike Elko. In their last game against Connecticut, they outperformed their opponents 2-0 in turnovers, including a memorable fumble recovery and scoop-and-score by defensive tackle DeWayne Carter during the third quarter. Coach Elko's tenure has seen Duke emerge victorious in the turnover battle in 12 out of 17 games, amassing an impressive 115 points off those turnovers, featuring 15 touchdowns, three field goals, and one two-point conversion.

Coach Mike Elko's tenure has been nothing short of extraordinary, boasting a remarkable 13-4 record, translating to an impressive .765 winning percentage, through his first 17 games at the helm of the Blue Devils. Notably, this milestone is the best 17-game start for a head coach in Duke's storied history. Furthermore, Coach Elko's record at this juncture surpasses that of all current ACC coaches when they began their respective tenures at their current institutions.

A balanced backfield, led by Tim Newman, Jr., Jacob Newman, and Shydem McCullough have averaged 187 rushing yards per game coming into this week’s game. Benari Black and Jack Smith lead a linebacker corps that have given opposing offenses fits so far. Scotland had the game’s opening possession and they made the most of it as the Scots drove 62 yards in 16 plays using the first 7:50 of the game. Syheam McQueen pushed it across the goal line on a two-yard dive to give the Scots the lead on the first of his two touchdowns.

East Forsyth responded with the next two scores. Micah Crowell scored on a four-yard run with 2:17 to go in the first quarter to tie the game at 7. Ronald Jackson, Jr. then plunged in from three yards out to put the Eagles in front 14-7 with 10:03 to go in the second quarter.

Northeastern took no time to get on the scoreboard, as the Eagles went five plays and 79 yards capped off by a 55-yard touchdown run from Aaron Harris to go up 7-0 on the opening possession. The Eagles tacked on another first quarter score when a deflected pass from Harris found Quasi Thomas who rumbled 22 yards to the end zone to put Northeastern up 14-0 with 1:26 to go in the quarter.

The two teams exchanged turnovers in the second quarter, with Northeastern coughing the ball up in their own red zone before Reidsville’s jump pass was intercepted in the end zone on the ensuing play. Another Northeastern turnover, this one an interception in their own end, set Reidsville up with a short field. Scotland Looks to Complete Cinderella Run Against East Forsyth

5:04 PM

If you were to ask most football fans and high school sports pundits which team was going to represent the 4A East in the state championship game, it’s a pretty easy assumption that Scotland would not have been the name that most people would have chosen. The Fighting Scots, led by Coach Richard Bailey, seemed to limp into the playoffs with a 5-5 record, losing to rival Richmond in the next to last week of the regular season before defeating Jack Britt in a re-rescheduled season finale. After knocking off Jordan in the first round, the Scots went back to the Triangle and shocked many when they took down #2 seed Cardinal Gibbons. The Scots clinched their ticket to the state championship game with a shutout win over a conference rival Seventy-First, avenging a 21-6 loss earlier in the season.

Gaining the 10-seed after their placement in the Southeastern 4A conference, the Fighting Scots were forced to go on the road for their entire playoff run if they wanted to reach Duke's Wallace Wade Stadium on Saturday night. After starting their playoff run in Durham with a win, the Scots return to Durham this Saturday night to take on the East Forsyth Eagles in the 4A state championship game.

Scotland loves to run the ball and has had a steady supply of running backs over the last few seasons. This season, Shyheim McQueen led the Fighting Scots on the ground with 1,254 yards, but Joseph McKoy has been just as crucial, stepping in for an injured McQueen during the regional final, and his 140 yards put him over the 1,000-yard mark for the season.

East Forsyth did not face challenging of a schedule in the playoffs until the regional final, but were definitely tested during Central Piedmont Conference play, having to match up with county rivals West Forsyth and Reagan. Special teams pushed East Forsyth to the regional title over Porter Ridge and special teams are just as crucial this Saturday to secure coach Todd Willert‘s first state football title and East Forsyth's second title in school history.

Amani Marshall has gained more than 1,000 yards on the ground the season and scored twenty touchdowns on the year. Coach Willard credits his team's offensive line play for the success they have seen the season.

The Eagles are looking to complete a perfect season for only the second time in school history, but a determined Scotland team will definitely be the toughest team the Eagles will see this year.

Northeastern and Reidsville in Only Battle of Unbeaten Teams This Week

4:42 PM

In the only matchup between two undefeated teams in this year’s state championship games, a Northeastern Eagles team looking for their first ever football state title will face off against a Reidsville Rams team that’s still looking to shake off the bitter taste of last year’s overtime title game loss this Saturday morning at NC State’s Carter-Finley Stadium.

Reidsville was able to squeak by a pesky Brevard team in the regional final to reach the state title game for the twenty-third time in their history. Out of those twenty-two previous appearances, the Rams have held up the champion’s trophy sixteen times and have proudly taken hold of the “Title Town” moniker bestowed on them by fans and media alike.

Offensively, the Rams balance their running and throwing attack well. Senior running back Trevion Canada leads the team with over 1,400 rushing yards and has reached the end zone twenty-two times. But, it’s the Reidsville defense that lives up to the cliché of “defense wins championships” as the Rams have shut out six opponents this season while only giving up more than fourteen points once in 2018, last week’s 24-21 win over Brevard in the western regional final.

The Eagles from Northeastern sport a rushing attack that has given teams fits this season with an impressive three players who have rushed for over 1,000 yards so far. Aaron Harris leads the team with 1,687 yards and fifteen touchdowns, Tyquan Mercer has scored seventeen touchdowns while rushing for over 1,200 yards, and Traveon Freshwater has scored sixteen touchdowns while also leading the Eagles defense with over 100 tackles. The fact that Freshwater was able to amass these stats while missing three games makes it even more impressive.

An interesting side note to this game – in 1969, both Northeastern and Reidsville were both 3A and won their respective regions. However, in the 1960s, the state association did not play state title games in the 3A classification so these two teams never got to settle who was the best 3A team in the state. In the minds of some, this year’s game between these two teams is for both the 1969 and 2018 state title.
