Charlotte Catholic Wins 4th Straight State Title

RALEIGH – Behind tough offensive line play, the Charlotte Catholic Cougars won their fourth straight state championship, this one a 14-7 tilt over the Havelock Rams.

Charlotte Catholic was paced on offense by freshman running back Ryan Henley, who led the squad with 86 yards on the ground.

Havelock’s Kamron Hoover was a standout on both sides of the ball for the Rams. The senior had nine receptions on offense and an interception on defense.

Charlotte Catholic’s Liam Barbee was named as the game’s most valuable player. The senior middle linebacker had thirteen tackles and was a force in the backfield for most of the night.

Winningest NCHSFB Teams of the 2010s

The 2010s will come to an end next week. This has been quite a decade of high school football in North Carolina. New programs have begun and excelled, others have declined, and a few programs have even ceased to exist over the last ten years. The winningest team in the state over the last ten years is the Charlotte Catholic Cougars who won an impressive 137 games, good for a 90.13% winning percentage. The Cougars appeared in a regional final all ten years of the decade and six state championship games, winning four titles along the way. Mallard Creek was the only other school to win at least 90% of their games, going 126-13-1. Behind Charlotte Catholic in total wins for the decade is Havelock (134), Tarboro (132), and Wake Forest (129).

2019 Preseason Top 15 Announced

Carolina Gridiron has released its preseason Top15 rankings of the football teams in North Carolina. With a winning streak of 45 games, three-time defending 4AA champ Wake Forest takes the top spot in 4A while 3A #1 Weddington is looking for its third title in four years. Reidsville, coming off its seventeenth overall state title, is looking to repeat in 2A. Two-time defending 1AA champ Tarboro holds the top spot in the 1A classification. These rankings are updated weekly during the regular season at www.carolinagridiron.com and on Twitter using the hashtag #CGTop15.

Final FAIR Rankings of the Year Released

The FAIR rankings are based on the following criteria.

Fresh start - All teams in a particular class start the season with identical ratings, or none at all.

All games weighted equally - There is no distinction made between conference and non-conference games, and a week one endowment game counts just as much as a week twelve contest.

Ignore non-NCHSAA games - Because the quality of opponents outside the NCHSAA can vary widely and can be difficult to judge, only NCHSAA games will be counted. Any contests against NCISAA or out-of-state opponents will be treated the same as an open date.

Reproducible - The formulas used should be transparent and simple enough that coaches and members of the media can verify the calculations for a particular team.

Congratulations to Wake Forest, Charlotte Catholic, Randleman, and Mount Airy for finishing #1 in their classifications.
