Second Half Surge Lifts Davidson Football over Stetson

DELAND, FL. – Davidson rattled off 20 consecutive second-half points and held off a late Stetson rally to pick up a Pioneer Football League opening win Saturday at Spec Martin Memorial Stadium, 26-20.

With the win, Davidson improves to 1-1 and opens the conference slate at 1-0, while with the loss Stetson begins the season 0-1.

“There’s too really tough things in sports and in football, one is winning on the road, and two is winning your first game of the year … especially after a heartbreaking loss at Elon. Really proud of this win. Really proud of our guys,” said head coach Scott Abell after the victory formation sealed it.  

Trailing 7-6 at the break, the Wildcats got in their groove in the third, scoring touchdowns on three consecutive drives to open the half. 

The ‘Cats first found the end zone when senior quarterback Tyler Phelps hit junior wide receiver Jalen Staples with a fade to the back corner of the end zone just 1:34 into the third. After a defensive stop on Stetson’s ensuing possession, the ‘Cats leaned on Phelps legs for four carries with the final taking him across the goal line, extending the lead, 20-7.

With the game seemingly in hand, Davidson’s defense stepped up big. Freshman Jonathan Hammond sacked Hatter quarterback Alex Piccirilli on fourth down to give the ball back to the offense. Hammond has been a force as a freshman for the ‘Cats, making his first career interception earlier in the game and previously forcing a fumble at Elon back in February.

Back on offense, Davidson needed just two plays to add six to the scoreboard. Junior running back Coy Williams darted off on a 43-yard scamper and classmate Eli Turner Jr. turned on the jets to finish off the final 25 yards with a catch and scamper to put his squad up, 26-7.

Stetson did make things interesting late, scoring touchdowns on back-to-back fourth-quarter possessions, helped along by an onside kick recovery, but the Davidson damage was too great to overcome.

The first half was full of special team highlights. Stetson marched down the field on their opening drive and was in position for a chip shot field goal, but senior Jaylon Bolden had other plans, blocking the kick to keep the Hatters from getting on the board early.

Wildcat sophomore kicker Caden Bonoffski showed off his leg, connecting on a 48-yard field goal try, one yard shy of his career-long. The local product added a 26-yard kick to keep the ‘Cats momentum rolling in the second quarter.

Davidson finished with 297 yards rushing out of 389 yards of total offense. Phelps led the ground game with 120 yards, while Williams chipped in 83. Phelps completed 7-of-10 passes for 92 yards, connecting with Staples four times for 55 yards and the score.

Defensively, junior’s Jalen Jefferson and Jake Alexander led the way with 10 tackles apiece. Alexander forced a fumble in the second quarter, recovered by classmate Cade Vela. 

Davidson makes their home debut Saturday, Mar. 20 against Presbyterian in PFL action at Richardson Stadium. Kick off from Stephen B. Smith Field is slated for 1 p.m.

Davidson Loses Late Lead at Stetson, Falls 28-17

DELAND, Fla. – For the second straight season, Davidson football let a late lead slip away at the hands of Stetson, falling on the road in Pioneer Football League action at Spec Martin Memorial Stadium Saturday, 28-17.





With the loss, Davidson falls to 2-4 overall and 0-3 in the PFL, while with the win Stetson improves to 2-5 and 1-3 in league play.













The ‘Cats headed into the final frame up 17-14 after a back and forth three quarters powered by a pair of Tyler Phelps rushing touchdowns and a 22-yard Trevor Smith field goal.





With the lead and defensive stop, the Wildcats looked in good shape down the stretch, but a muffed punt gave the Hatters the ball back in Davidson territory and the Hatters were able to capitalize. Stetson quickly went 5-plays and 135 yards as quarterback Colin McGovern found Justin Jordan on a left fade to the back of the end zone for the go-ahead score, 21-17.





After a few more change of possessions in the fourth, the Wildcats came within the edge of their own goal line, propelled by a Wesley Dugger 35-yard run into Stetson territory, but a few close spots left the ‘Cats just shy of a first down and the ball went back over to Stetson late.





The Wildcat front line had stuffed the Hatter rushing game all day, allowing just 41 yards on the ground through three quarters, but Hatter running back Gordon Stetson broke one for 95 yards to put the game away with under a minute to go, 28-17.





The Wildcats outgained the Hatters 457 yards to 354 including another big rushing day of 236 yards, led by Dugger’s 160-yard game. The freshman has eclipsed 100 yards three times this season. Phelps completed 20-of-33 passes for 186 yards and an interception. Sophomore William Wicks, a former Terry Sanford standout, caught seven passes for 97 yards, including a 46-yard, third down grab to set up the first Davidson touchdown of the day.





The Wildcats got on the board first after junior Boo Jordan blocked a kick to give his ‘Cats great starting field position. The Wicks catch came on the third down of that series that set up a 4-yard Phelps scoring scamper, his first of two in the day.





The Davidson defense was stout early as sophomore linebacker Geroge Hatalowich recorded eight first-quarter tackles, 1.5 for loss, and broke up a pass in the end zone. He ended with a career-high 12 tackles and 2.5 for loss. Former Pine Forest standout Bryce Perry-Martin made 9.0 tackles, while he and senior Brendan Simpkins each tallied a sack. Senior corner and former Eastern Alamance Eagle Ryan Woods had another strong day in the secondary, making life difficult for the Stetson downfield weapons.





Smith’s second-quarter field goal broke a seven-all tie in the second and gave Davidson a 10-7 halftime lead. Stetson regained the lead on an 81-yard punt return for a touchdown in the third, before the momentum shifted back the ‘Cats way, capping an eight-play, 65-yard drive with a 28-yard Phelps scoring scamper helped along by great blocking downfield from sophomore tight end and former Hoggard Viking Hunter Louthan.





The muffed punt came shortly after as Stetson took control and cruised to victory late for the second consecutive season.







Davidson returns home Saturday, Oct. 21 when Dayton comes to Richardson Stadium. Kickoff with the Flyers is scheduled for 1 p.m.

Blocked Field Goal Lifts Stetson to 30-24 Overtime PFL Win at Campbell

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Donald Payne blocked Mitchell Brown’s
field goal attempt in overtime and finished an 80-yard return after taking a
later from Jeb Boudreaux to lift Stetson to a 30-24 Pioneer Football League win
over Campbell Saturday at Barker-Lane Stadium.







The Hatters (4-3, 2-2) led 24-10 with 11:04 left in the
fourth quarter before the Camels scored twice in the last 2:13 to force overtime.





Playing in front of the largest crowd in Barker-Lane Stadium
history (6673), Campbell (3-3, 1-2) had the opening possession.  On the first play of overtime, Stetson was
called for pass interference in the end zone. 
However, the Camels were flagged for offensive pass interference on the
next play and were only able to reach the Hatter 13 before attempting a 30-yard
field goal.

Payne, who also finished with 13 tackles, blocked Brown’s
attempt and Boudreaux picked up the ball at the 20 yard line and ran all the
way to the Campbell two before lateraling to Brown for the winning score.





Stetson won its third-straight road game by converting three
Campbell turnovers into a pair of scores. 
After Jared Joyner’s fumble gave the Hatters a first down on the Camel
22, backup QB Cole Martin hit Donald Parham for a 14-yard scoring pass to put
the visitors ahead 14-10.





Stetson extended the lead late in the third when Cole
Mazza’s four-yard run capped a 72-yard march and Grant Amick’s PAT pushed the
margin to 10-21 with 0:11 to play in the period.





Amick added a 19-yard field goal with 11:04 to play to give
Stetson a two touchdown lead.





Trailing 24-10 with 5:18 to play, back-up quarterback
Anthony Robbins led the Camels on a 71-yard drive.  The junior hit Trey Sanders with a 10-yard
scoring pass to bring the Camels within one score.  However, a bad snap on the point after
attempt left Campbell trailing by eight (24-16) with 2:13 remaining.





Stetson handled an ensuing short pop up on side kick and ran
the clock down before lining up for a punt. 
Scott Miller broke through the Hatter line and blocked Eric Fogle’s punt
and the Camels took over at the Stetson 28 with 1:11 to play.





Facing a fourth down from the Hatter six yard line, Robbins
found Aaron Blockmon in the back of the end zone to bring the Camels within two
with 11 seconds to play.  Robbins
connected with Blockmon in the right corner to complete the two-point
conversion.





Playing in relief of starter Gaven DeFilippo, who went down
late in the opening half, Martin completed 9-of-15 passes for 120 yards and one
score.  Mazza gained 77 yards on 20
carries, while Parham finished with five catches for 66 yards.





In his most extensive action of the season, Robbins
completed 29-of-47 throws for 209 yards and two scores after relieving injured
starter Elijah Burress in the first series. 
De’Shawn Jones ran for 90 yards on 10 carries, 88 on his first two
touches, while Bryan Bailey had eight receptions for 52 yards.





David Lazear also had 13 tackles for Stetson, while Glenn
Adesoji had 10.  Daniel Bostick led
Campbell with 11 tackles and Jack Ryan chipped in 10.





The Camels finished with a 335-294 edge in total offense,
including 98 yards in the final two drives of regulation, but was a minus-two
(3-1) in turnover margin.





Campbell took the opening kick-off and marched 71 yards to
grab an early lead.  The 16-play drive
stalled at the Stetson four yard line and Brown’s 21-yard field goal put the
Camels on the board.





After the Camel defense forced a three-and-out, Campbell
took over on its own 12 yard line. 
De’Shawn Jones ran 40 yards on his first touch of the game to give the
Camels a first down at the Hatter 48. 
After an incomplete pass, Jones broke off a 48-yard scoring run down the
left side line.  Brown’s PAT gave the
Camels a 10-0 lead with 7:58 left in the quarter.





Campbell again forced a punt and took over at its own
10.  However, Robbins was sacked in the
end zone by Davion Belk, forcing a fumble and Shayne White recovered for what
proved to be the only Stetson points of the half.





Both starting quarterbacks left the field with injuries in
the first half.  Burress, who entered the
game ranked fourth in the league in total offense and fifth in rushing (71.0),
went out just six plays into the contest. 
DeFilippo left the field on the Hatters’ last drive in the second
quarter.







Campbell returns to action next Saturday at Drake, while
Stetson travels to Dayton.
