Davidson Falls in FCS Playoffs to No. 4 Jacksonville State, 49-14

6:30 PM

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – For the first time in 52 years Davidson football ended in the postseason, falling to fourth-seeded and nationally ranked number eight Jacksonville State in the first round of the FCS Championship Playoffs Saturday at JSU Stadium, 49-14.

“Very proud of our guys for being here. We weren’t satisfied with that … Our expectations are to become a program that can each-and-every year compete at a level in the playoffs,” said head coach Scott Abell. “This year was a measuring stick for us. We certainly understood the challenge.

The Wildcats were in it for much of the first half, dominating time of possession with nearly 22 minutes in control.

After falling behind 7-0 early, Davidson did what they’ve been able to do all year and manipulated a clock-eating drive of nearly eight minutes, ending with junior Coy Williams's seventh scoring scamper of the year.

On the ensuing Gamecock possession, Wildcat senior corner Jaylon Bolden made a beautiful play down the Davidson sideline, intercepting JSU’s Zion Webb for his second pick of the season. But the ‘Cats were unable to capitalize on the scoreboard.

Trailing 14-7 late in the second quarter, JSU scored twice in seven seconds, capitalizing on a Davidson special team’s miscue to gap the ‘Cats 28-7 at the break.

Jacksonville State took the second-half kick and quickly broke it open, scoring in just 1:16, a 55-yard Webb to Pat Jackson hook up. The Gamecocks added another late in the third, and again early in the fourth to push their lead out to 49-7.

Despite the deficit and with time running out, Davidson played until the final whistle, utilizing every bit of their opportunity. Senior quarterback Tyler Phelps threw his seventh touchdown pass of the season with 2:49 left to junior tight end Jackson Sherrard, 49-14 Gamecocks.

“It means everything to the program. To be here and to play today, it was surreal. Definitely a good end to the career for sure,” said Phelps.

On the final JSU possession, Davidson went out swinging. Sophomore Brian Jacobs forced a fumble recovered by senior James Boyle, giving their offense one last shot at the end zone. Jacobs led the team with six tackles, four solos.

“We knew we’d be here. It was just a matter of time. It was a process,” said junior linebacker Jalen Jefferson, who finished with four tackles.

The Wildcats were the first team to break 100 yards rushing against Jacksonville State in 10 tries, churning out 202 yards on the ground. Williams’ led the way with 62 yards on 16 carries, while Dylan Sparks gained 55 on 19 carries. Phelps completed 7 of 15 passes for 59 yards, connecting with junior Jalen Staples four times. Davidson finished with 41:59 of possession, but it was JSU’s big plays that proved the difference, using a balanced rushing (222 yards) and passing (239) attack.

“Overall, so proud of our guys. We’re really excited about our future … every rep was a rep for our future. The momentum that we finished with will carry us into the offseason,” said Abell.

NC State Cruises to 34-6 Win Over ECU in Season Opener

12:21 PM
RALEIGH – Coming into Saturday afternoon’s game against East Carolina, NC State had significant question marks on offense after losing their top playmakers to graduation. Half of the career starts for the entire Wolfpack offense coming into the game were by two members of their offensive line. No returning players had ever made a start at quarterback, running back, center, or left tackle. The inexperience didn’t phase the Wolfpack, though, as redshirt sophomore quarterback Matthew McKay (making his first career start) eclipsed the 300-yard mark in a 34-6 win over East Carolina.

East Carolina started the game on fire behind the arm and legs of sophomore Holton Ahlers. The Greenville native started the game 6-6 on the first drive and moved the Pirates inside the Wolfpack 10-yard line, but a big hit by State’s Tanner Ingle loosened the ball from Ahlers’s grip at the goal line and it was recovered by Jarius Morehead for the touchback.

NC State wasted no time seizing the opportunity to get their new offense out on the field. Two runs by Ricky Person and catches by Thayer Thomas put the Wolfpack into scoring position in a hurry and freshman Zonovan Knight punched it in from nine yards out to give the home team an early 7-0 lead.

The Pirates got on the scoreboard on the next drive with a 47-yard Jake Verity field goal to bring the Pirates within four points, a margin that would carry into the second quarter. ECU tried to make it a one-point game early in the second quarter, but a 52-yard field goal attempt went wide. NC State drove down to the ECU 9-yard line but was forced to settle for a 27-yard Christopher Dunn Field goal. When a busted play resulted in another NC State touchdown late in the half, it was clear that fate was on the side of the Wolfpack on this afternoon.

NC State made it a three-score game in the third quarter when McKay found a streaking Tabari Hines down the right sideline for a 48-yard score for the only points of the third quarter. The fourth quarter went like the rest of the game with the ECU offense unable to get much movement due to a swarming NC State defense and the Wolfpack offense methodically moving down the field. When Matthew McKay went 21 yards on a keeper around the left side and hit the end zone, it was the final exclamation point on the day.

With the victory today, NC State has now won ten straight home openers and all seen under head coach Dave Doeren. Both teams will face in-state FCS opponents next Saturday as NC State (1-0) hosts Western Carolina of the Southern Conference while ECU (1-0) hosts the Big South’s Gardner-Webb.

Notable North Carolinians

Matthew McKay (Wakefield) – The redshirt sophomore went 25 of 37 for 308 yards and a score in his first-ever start at quarterback. He also rushed for two touchdowns on the afternoon.

Chris Ingram (Mooresville) – The junior cornerback picked off one pass and led the team with seven solo tackles

Christopher Dunn (North Davidson) – The sophomore kicker was good from 27 and 34 yards out, 4-4 on PAT attempts, and routinely made the Pirates start deep in their own territory.
